WHN Needs help!

Dear Blogville, WHN has a dilemma and it involves Snoopy! As you know he is an adored member of the pack but has started becoming hyper aggressive about his peeps.  The entire pack goes car once a day- and he goes cracker dawg crazy whenever he sees anyone near the car- near being a relative term- someone could be walking three lanes over and away from the car but Snoopy sees that person as  threat to the car!  Then he started nipping at us as we get out of the car!  (In fact the only time he does not nip at us egressing his car is when we arrive home) Yesterday WHN went to the library to return some books accompanied by all three of the DWM.  When she tried to get out of the car, Snoopy bit her on the back.  The skin was not broken but she is sporting a dollar coin sized bruise on her left shoulder.

Snoopy is in great health- he saw the vet last month. He does NOT act up while on his walkies- he is quiet and just wants to run and walk forever.  (We are thinking of entering him in the Iditaraod Race in Alaska next year) .  He is very protective of his home, family and his car- We have no idea why he is so aggressive- he has been doing splendidly with us and while we are not afraid of him, we are wondering if there is anyone with any suggestions as to what could be causing this and what we can do to help Snoopy. He has lived with us for six months now and he is going nowhere as Blogville knows, but this is new behavior on his part.  He did not do this when he first came to live with us- in fact it only started in the last couple of weeks, with the nipping and biting starting this week.  We think it is severe separation anxiety, but are stumped.

Rosemary B here
Awwww we just read Friday's postie. We know that pain. Ginger is safe now, but we are the ones that suffer when we remember the fun, and we were not even ready to say good-bye or anythinggggg!

Well, we are very concerned about Snoopy being a Nipper-McNippersons.
I think the vetguy might give you some tips, or perhaps you could call the Doggie Whisperer and he can Re-Habil-Atate him.

Poor Snoopy may be thinking that when you go some place... you are thinking of Leaving him there.. instead of taking him back to his beloved furever home. It could be his way of telling you that he does NOT want to be left somewhere.
Maybe he should be restrained in a Harness while in the car. WE have the car harnesses that our mom made fur us.. and we ALWAYS wear them. They snapped to the seat belt thingy... so we won't fall off the seat or get thrown around or anythingy. Our harnesses make us feel Safe and VERY SECURE.
If Snoopy is in a harness he would NOT be able to reach you to bite... AND it might make him feel SECURE.

First, has he had a full blood panel done lately? If everything is normal with bloodwork, I think it's resource guarding. Be very, very careful when looking for info on it and on how to remedy it, as any dominance/corrections based training is only going to make it much worse. He's a great link on it: http://www.dogforum.com/dog-behavior/resource-guarding-causes-prevention-modification-7511/
And a great book for it is Mine! by Jean Donaldson http://www.amazon.com/Mine-Practical-Guide-Resource-Guarding/dp/0970562942

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you other than trying to find a good behaviorist in your area that can work with you.

Oh NO!! Not our beloved Snoopy! I'm NOT telling Muffin about this bcuz she'll be very upset to hear all of this.

We've not a clue as to why this is happening but it surely isn't a good thing. Maybe try the links that Nola's Mom sent to you. (We know just how great she does training Nola so that may be a good place to start.)

We'll keep our paws crossed that you can put the kibosh on this problem quickly! Please keep us posted.

Hugs,
Lily Belle

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, how old is Snoopy?

Once Tuiren realized this was her home and she would be LOVED no matter what we started having problems with her, until then she was a very good girl. We guesses she was on her best behavior to lull Mommy who only wanted ONE DOG, into taking her in.

It seems like Snoopy sees himself as your protector, now why he is seeing these things as threats is beyond us but maybe some doggie classes where he can socialize might be helpful. Fenny is very protective of all of us and tries to boss us around sometimes. Even the Mom, although he has NEVER bitten her but he will try to get between her and anything he sees as danger. He wouldn't let her go out the back door once. He got between Mommy and the door and anytime she tried to get around him he would head butt her back. Turns out there was a moccasin next to the door. Mommy would have probably gotten bitten by the snake if she had went out the back door, so even though she thought he was a BAD Dog he was actually being a GOOD Dog.

Wesa think NOLA's mama's advice is best. She does work positively with NOLA which we agree with the methods...and yes...resource guarding or separation anxiety sounnd very likely...either one/the other/or both.
Much Love DWM Mama!!
