The Treasure of Squeaky Toy Island- Chapter 10

The Treasure of Squeaky Toy Island
Chapter 10

“Do tell”, Penny said.

“Over at the Pugs Ahoy, they have the show every night”, Ruby said. “Greta and Hazel always wear those costumes, the ones that look just like figuresnoots. If we can get Tasha to stay out of the water long enough that her back legs reappear.............”

“She can wear one of those costumes, and...........”

“And Captain Snoopy will think it's his figuresnoot. Perfect!”

“As long as they don't run into any of those sailors from the submarine. They hate furmaids worse than Captain Snoopy.”

Ruby rubbed her back, and said, “Don't remind me.”

Over at the Pugs Ahoy, the show was over, and Greta and Hazel had now resumed their regular jobs, namely keeping the suds flowing. Captain Snoopy downed his third pint, and said, “Ahr! Let's have us some rum!”
Greta noticed the empty glasses, and said, “How long do you plan on gracing us with your presence?”

Frankie pointed out the doors, and said, “At least 'til the fog clears. Woofskey for me, and hold the rum.”

“Yeah, I know. Black Taniels?”

“Black Taniels.”

“Of course.”

Walter watched the big steam locomotive roar across the drawbridge, trailing five passenger cars behind it. Once the last car was clear, he watched the red marker lights fade into the darkness, then stepped inside the operator's cabin, and said, “That was the last one.”

Millie looked up at the model board, and said, “How's the marine traffic?”

“We have the pilot launch bringing in a nuclear submarine. Once it's in, we can shut everything down and head for the Doghouse.”

Millie checked the clock, and said, “The Doghouse closes at 11. Pugs Ahoy is open all night.”

Pugs Ahoy it is. That last train clear the interlocking yet?”

“Last Circuit now.”

“Okay, I'm going out on the balcony. As soon as it clears, raise the bridge, and signal that sub that it's clear to enter the main ship channel.”

“Copy that.”

Just then, the light on the model board went out, and Millie hit the horn button.

About half way between the islands, Tasha and Puddles were trying to safely steer the speedboat through an ever thickening fog that the lighthouse was barely able to penetrate. Following the sound of the fog horn, Tasha said, “So, we get to this Pugs Ahoy place, und find de bone box, ja?”

“Ja, I mean yeah. Ruby said it was right behind the bar. They stash the dresses there every night after the show.”

“Und I have to wear de dress, zo Snoopy tinks I'm his figuresnoot, ja?”

“Ja, I mean yeah. You speak the worst combination of German and English I've ever heard.”

“Ah, but you have heard it, ja?”

Ernie and Easy crept around the harbor, holding up the lantern to read off the name of each vessel as they passed. After many heartbreaks, Easy finally said, “Pay dirt, Skipper!”

Ernie grinned as he read off the letters. “This is it! And she's deserted. Get ready with the hawser.”

Easy moved forward, grabbed the eye of the line, and said, “Standing by, skipper.”

Ernie grabbed the sweep oar, and eased the longship forward, until it was abeam of the pier.

Easy took the line, and jumped up onto the pier, slipping the eye over a piling. “Secure, Skipper.”

Ernie ran up and jumped onto the pier. Easy looked up at the Rawhide, and said, “Shall we board her, Skipper?”

“Captain Snoopy wouldn't be daft enough to leave the booty aboard the ship unguarded. And since he knew we were on his tail, he must have already hauled it off for burial.”

“So what good does it do us to find the ship if the booty ain't here?”

“Patience, me lad. Get me something o' Captain Snoopy's.”

Easy looked up the dark gangplank, and said, “Up there?”

“Aye, lad. Step lively.”

The Treasure of Squeaky Toy Island, Chapter 9

The Treasure of Squeaky Toy Island
Chapter 9

The churning grew more violent, and it looked like a big black shape was making its way to the surface. Penny sniffed the air, and said, “For some reason, I'm getting this odd craving for vinegar and olive oil.”

“And I'm getting a craving for lettuce and tomato, hold the onions”, Ruby said. “You know what that means.”

They both said, “Submarine!”

Suddenly , the boat jerked upward, and something seemed to be lifting them up out of the water. The churning gave way to torrents all around them, but only for a moment. Then, everything grew still and quiet.

But not for long. A loud whistle blew, and a booming voice shouted, “Attention all hands! On deck, special sea and anchor detail! Make all preparations for docking! Sea and anchor detail muster topside on the forcastle! Station the maneuvering watch in the control room! Captain's on the bridge!”

High up on the bridge, a voice shouted, “You, on deck, off! Get that gig off my boat, now! Get it off!”

Ruby looked up, and said, “Ranger? I didn't know you were in the Navy.”

“Captain Ranger to you! And now you know! Get that piece of junk off my boat! Now!”

Just then, the forward hatch opened, and a pug in dark blue coveralls stepped out on deck. He stepped back from the hatch, and said, “Okay, get your furry butts up here and start hauling these lines! Move it!”

Penny stared in disbelief. “Angus?”

“Chief Angus.”

“You're in the Navy, too?”

“Reserves. We're coming back from our 12-day tour. If these goldbrickers ever get up here. Hey, what's the holdup down there?”

Several other pugs climbed up on deck. From above, Ranger shouted, “I thought I told you two furmaids to get off my boat!”

“We can't, Captain. Our boat's grounded on your deck.”

“So it is. Chief?”

“Yes, sir?”

“Help the ladies get their boat off our deck.”

Angus smiled, and said, “With pleasure, sir.” He then nodded to the other pugs, who grabbed the boat, and shoved it off into the water so hard it nearly capsized before settling in the upright position. Chief Angus looked down, and said, “And stay off!”

As they throttled up and sped away, Chief Angus turned back to the crew, and said, “Okay, let's get cracking!”

Inside Squeaky Toy Harbour, Ernie and Easy were searching for a place to tie up, and keeping an eye out for the Rawhide. Ernie was sure they had docked by now, but the fog was keeping them from seeing much of anything, except the flashes of the light buoys marking the main ship channel.

If the Rawhide was nearby, Ernie hoped the fog would allow them to board the vessel unseen. The shallow draft of his longship was now working to advantage. The diaphone was sounding again, along with many other fog signals from other ships and buoys, and they even heard four short blasts of the launch whistle, indicating the pilot was going to meet another inbound vessel. Ernie didn't think the inbound marine traffic was an issue. He would be wrong.

They strained to hear the sound of footsteps in the darkness, in hopes that they would lead to their target, but each time Ernie thought he heard a sound, a fog horn would scatter his thoughts. And to make matters worse, the Coast Guard was patroling the harbor in their launches.

Ruby and Penny were now halfway to Blue Platinum Island, and the fog was thinning. Penny looked back for a moment and said, “What was that all about?”

“There's an underwater ledge about a mile from the Squeaky Toy Shore”, Ruby said. “Past there, the water's not deep enough for the submarines to stay under water without grounding.”

“Maybe we should be more careful.”

“Wrecking ships is our business!”

“Oh, yeah. Did you get a look at that ship that came in ahead of us?”

“Yeah. It was kind of long and low, and the sail was square, and had red and white stripes. Why?”

“Did you notice if it had a figuresnoot?”

“Yeah. It looked like a dachshund with its mouth open.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“That's a Wienerking ship. When we get to Blue Platinum Island, we better tell Tasha and Puddles to warn Captain Snoopy when they get back to port.”

“Captain Snoopy won't listen to Furmaids. He hates Furmaids.”

“Then what can we do? Frankie's in danger.”

“I've got an idea.”

Ranger inspecting the place mat- did WHN do a good job?

Ranger's placemat

This is What's Her Name's (WHN) second category entry in this year's Pets On Quilts extravaganza!  This category is Dog Themed Quilts and below are the entries for the category!!!!

First up we have the Christmas Stocking made for our beloved FENDI!!!!!  As you can see, WHN used a photo sent to her from Fendi's mom and created a pieced applique for the central motif on the stocking.  Fendi is simply WHNs favorite pieced applique- so many fabrics and tiny puzzle pieces, but WHN believes that this is her best applique work to date!  We hope that you do too!

Next up is our buddy Ranger!  He is a gorgeous Scottie living the high life in the great state of North Carolina!  He too, like Fendi, won his place mat via a Blogville auction held to raise money for a friend.

Third item is a set of three stocking for the Idaho Pug Ranch- Greta, Bailey and Hazel!  They too won an auction for a stocking and their mom wanted all three to have stockings she ordered two for the girls!  The auction was for either a photo on fabric of the winner or a pieced applique, and the lovely momma of these pugs chose the photo option. The stockings were quilted, and the photos were quilted onto the stocking fronts.

Fourth item is a memory quilt for the Amber Da Weenie pack of Florida!  Amber is actually the inspiration for the place mats and hers was entered two years ago!  Her beloved Chinese Crested sister April died two years ago, a couple of weeks before we lost our beloved Ginger.  Knowing the pain of this loss for Linda and her husband, we the DWM had WHN make a memory quilt of April for them.

And so you have WHN's four entries in the category of dog themed quilts- we hope that you enjoy them!

Pets on Quilts 2014 Entry- Cat Themed Quilts!!!!

Archie from My Three Moggies

Good morning Blogville!!!!  Sable and Snickers here!  As we are the newest members of the Dachsies With Moxie, albeit fosters from Dachshund Rescue of North America (DRNA), we have been chosen to introduce this year's entries for WHN!

In this category, Cat themed quilts, WHN is entering the place mat that she made for Archie of My Three Moggies fame, AND the place mat made for Coccolino, our favorite pig.  While Coccolino is not a cat, he lives with two cats- Lacci and Pizzico, and so his place mat is being shown here.  Archie lives in the UK, and his mom has already ordered matching place mats for Archie's brothers!!!!!!

As you can see, WHN (What's Her Name) prefers to use batiks for placemats- they have a tighter weave and while that make them more difficult to quilt, the density of their weave and weft threads also make them sturdier for daily use.  Archie's mom won the placemat from one of Blogville's auctions held to raise funds for veterinary care and Coccolino's mom Katie also won hers from a different Blogville auction.  (Did you know that Coccolino sells the best pet beds around and that he closely supervises his mom in their construction?  We have two, and WHN has ordered four more of these beds for us!)

Now we are headed off to leave comments on the other blog entrants-  please check out all of the other entrants at Lily Pad Quilting and leave comments- there are prizes galore this year again , and we want everyone to enjoy the talents on display!
