Winter- MORE SNOW!!!!

We received more than two inches of the flaky stuff last night and it is snowing right now!!!! When will the horror end?  Will we end up with 87 feet of the stuff?   We could see the entire yeard, full of grass yesterday- now it is covered with this cold white stuff again.

Anyhoo- next weekend, Mom and Dad are taking the Dynamic Trio to South Carolina!!!  Mom's godmother is in hospice care and she wants to see her again, as does Dad.  We get to tag along, but we have to be very good at the hotel.  Ginger is an old hand at staying at hotels and going on really long (87 hours) car rides. Now Chip and Thai are going to get into the act as intrepid explorer dachsies.  We know the trip isn't a vacation, but maybe we can go to the beach in the afternoon.

(Apologies to Frankie for stealing his 87 thunder)

The Daily Thai- Saturday Edition

Well, things have been a little slow around here.  Mom has been very tired lately, napping for hours after she gets home from Mass.  Yesterday, she fell asleep on the couch about 10 and woke up after 1:30.  (And we thought dachsies slept a lot) Thankfully she is having blood work done today.  Mom apologized for the napping- it happens when her depression is making a very strong come back, so she does not want us to worry.  Thai slept in his bed and Ginger and Chip protected Mom while she slept on the couch.  Thankfully these naps don;t interfere with our feeding schedule- 6 AM breakfast; 8/9 AM snack; 12 noon, Snack; 2/3 snack; 6 PM dinner.

Pup SCouts of America- First Meeting

Today is the official first meeting of the Pup SCouts of America.  Chip and Thai have been very vocal about attending and Ginger wore her best pink outfit.

First we sang:
Order of the Paw
PUP SCOUT TROOP MEETING!!!

"Everywhere we go-o
An-imals want to know-o
Who we a-are
And where we come from

So we tell them
We're from Order of the Paw
Mighty, mighty Pup Scouts
And if they can't hear us

We woof a little louder!"

Then Troop leader Miss Bailey had us take our oaths:

Please raise your right Paw and repeat after me!

"On the honor of my paw I will do my best
to do my duty to my fur and non-fur community
& to obey the Pup Scout Law
to help other pups and their people at all times
to keep myself in tip top pup condition,
furry aware & ready at a moments notice.
"

Next, we received our official troop meeting badge!
This badge is given to our distinguished members who
have joyfully attended the first troop meeting!

What do you think of the Pup Scout Biscuit?
Would you like to sell Pup Scout Biscuits
to raise funds for service projects like...

- eradicating our neighborhoods of squirrels!
- creating legislation to stop the pupperazzi form taking our photos!

Pup Scout Troop Education:

Thank you for coming!
Please remember to sign in... leave a comment
and of course have a WOOF-ER-IFIC time!

We will close with one more song!

The Daily Thai- Wednesday Edition

After the raucous celebration last night (Thai's visit to the VET!!) and for the Brown victory in the Massachusetts special election, we did not forget to also celebrate Thai's first week anniversary with us !!!  The menu consisted of double cheeseburgers, cheese only, for the Dynamic Trio, and Angus Meals for the two leggers.  Thai went to bed early, due to the strain of the VET, and we had to wake him up to go to the Big Bed.  What a day he had!!!

happy Anniversary Thai!!!  We are so glad that you are here!!!

The Daily Thai- Tuesday Edition

Thai just survived an horrendous experience_ he had to see the VET!!!!  He weighs 17.3 pounds, received his 3 year rabies and 3 yr DHPP vaccinations, and tested negative for heartworms.  He returns on 11 Feburay for his dental, fecal test, and the vet will look at the six hopefully benign growths on his chest area.  The veterinarian says Thai is a very brave boy, with the number of medical issues in his past, including lower back surgery!

Thai

Well, it is official, Thai is just a Momma's boy!!!!  With his back surgery and arthritis, he is unable to go up and down the stairs in the house, but when Mom goes upstairs for any reason, he waits for her at the bottom, and if she takes too long, he reminds her of his presence with a mighty WOOF!!!!  Also, he is sleeping in the Big Bed, and loves to lick Mom (it takes him about a half an hour or so to settle in and then another half an hour for licking)  He loves to spend time in the kitchen with Mom, and when she leaves the house for morning Mass, upon her return, she can hear him barking!!!!

Ginger is in love with him and Chip is a little unhappy about another boy in the house, but all are getting along well.  Today we are going to start having Thai on the couch with all of us, so he feels more like family  Hope we can make enough room.

Thai's first photos!!!!!

Thai is here!!!!

Thai arrived yesterday around 10 AM, and we are very excited!!!  He is a standard back and tan guy, who has had the back surgery, but he walks ok.  He still has trouble with his back legs and has arthritis, but boy can he move fast!!!  The kitchen is his favorite room (LOL) and he does not like to cuddle on the couch.  Instead he loves to lie on Chip;s bed in the sun.

Mom's evil computer is acting up again- it refuses to recognize her camera cards so she has to go to WalMart to get a disc made.

Lots more to come later!!!

(PeeS- Mom and Dad decided not to change his name to Tank- Thai suits him perfectly)

Ask a Vet: How can I help my dachshund avoid back problems common to the breed?

January 11, 2010 | 4:26 pm

Have a non-emergency question about your pet's health? Dr. Heather Oxford of L.A. veterinary hospital California Animal Rehabilitation (CARE) is here to help! In this installment of Ask a Vet, Dr. Oxford offers some advice to reader jane about common back problems in dachshunds:

Dachshunds Jane's question: What are some ways to keep a dachshund's back healthy and strong? Other than preventing accidents, are there any exercises or supplements I can give my dog?

Heather Oxford, DVM: As you may know, many dachshunds have a hereditary back condition called Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). This causes the discs to slowly degenerate, which makes them less resilient shock absorbers. Any activities that cause compression through the spine are considered high-risk for disc herniations and neurological problems including paralysis.

Such activities include running down stairs, jumping down from furniture, or jumping up and down on the hind limbs. At CARE, we encourage spinal flexibility and core strength by dozens of exercises. One such exercise is sitting up, a.k.a. "begging." This is a core strengthener that helps protect the back from injury. Also, I recommend fish oils that have concentrated amounts of omega-3s such as DHA and EPA. Not all fish oils are created equal, so make sure yours is independently tested for mercury and other contaminants, and that it meets its label claims.

To submit your question for Dr. Oxford, just leave a comment on this post and look for her answer in an upcoming installment of Ask a Vet!

About our vet: Dr. Oxford earned her bachelor of science degree at Bowling Green State University, Ohio. She also earned a master of public health degree in epidemiology from Emory University and went on to work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. She then went to the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her doctor of veterinary medicine degree. She practices at California Animal Rehabilitation and is certified in veterinary rehabilitation and acupuncture. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Wade, and German shepherd, Tess.

We the Dachsies With Moxie, Declare that ..,,, We want the SNOW to end!!!

Snow fell last night again!!!  Dad went out and shovelled the driveway and the patio in back, the latter just for us.  It is getting more difficult to utilize the front lawn as the snow keeps falling on us.  We received at least 87 inches, just like Frankie does, and several times 87 inches are due today (OK, Mom says to cut it out- Frankie uses 87 inches since he gets more snow than us, and it is not right to steal his trademark!!! We have to come up with our own-  Anyhoo, we got 4 inches last night and are supposed to get 6 to 10 more today)  Mom got out Dad's longjohns from the US Navy for today's onslaught of snowy flakey thingamabobs.  Ginger is wearing a new sweater, since the other one is in the wash, and Chip is manning up again- no clothing, NADA.  he heads down the stairs from the front proch and goes for a jaunt along the sidewalk.  When he is done, he can no longer bound across the front lawn, as the snos is almost to the top of his head, so he gets confused and Ginger has to Sit by self (what Mom calls our gopher imitation) to see him at the foot of the driveway.

Mom and Dad's Anniversary

Seven years ago today, Mom and Dad were married at St. Catherine Laboure Parish in Middletown, NJ.  Aunt REgina gave Mom away as our grandpawrents were unable to be at the wedding due to Grandpaw's poor health.

SNOW!!!!! AGAIN!!!!!

Chip made a run for it this morning- however, the snow was too deep for him.  Here he returns home from next door, where Ginger's boyfriend lives.  *His "runs" only entail using next door's lawn in lieu of ours, I guess for a change of "scenery")

365 Project

No, we are NOT the original discoverers of this idea- we leave that to the Sheridan street kids blog.

Anyhoo, you take and post one picture a day for an entire year- What a great way to share your dachsies with the world.  Of course, Mom's photo for today was NOT of us- she took one of the flag!!!  (We refused to pose since she made us go out for a nature break and it is COLD- it is snowing again and she told us it won't stop until later this week.  HELP!!!!)

our inof is http://365project.org/trainwife1962/365, and here is our first picture"

People Food!!!!

Drats, Mom was getting ready to make a glrious turkey with green bean casserole and mashed potatoes, and her overn BROKE!!!!  What is up with this thing?  We were going to have turkey, Mom promised.  Now we have to wait till Tuesday for some strnage man to fix it.  Dad thankfully cut up the smoked turkey and managed to drop pieces for us.  Hmmm, maybe he is starting to see things our way?
